The Foresight4Food Initiative explores how foresight – a key tool for governments, business and civil society to better understand future risks and opportunities – and scenario analysis for the global food system could be improved.

Sustain-a-bite aims to overcome these issues through innovative, sustainable, and minimal processing methods to create nutritious, tasty, and affordable plant-based foods, aligning with the EU Green Deal’s Farm2Fork Strategy.

FoSSNet is a four-year Horizon Europe funded project dedicated to establish a long-lasting pan-European network for Food Systems Science, advancing open and inclusive science and education for food systems transformation. 

FOSTR (Fostering food system transformation by integrating heterogeneous perspectives in knowledge and innovation within the European Research Area) aims to build a foundation for a new Knowledge and Innovation (K&I) governance structure for Europe’s food system.

The FoodCoST project brings together economic and environmental researchers at the frontier of food system modelling, and in collaboration with leading international organisations on the economics of food system transformation. 

The Co-Centre for Sustainable Food Systems encompasses a research programme of oriented basic and applied research in the areas of science, technology, engineering and social sciences across the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland  and Great Britain.  It aims to assist the development and competitiveness of industry, enterprise

CAROWIA explores how biotechnology can enable the sustainable production of functional food ingredients and support healthier, more resilient food systems - using precision fermentation to produce nutrients such as β-carotene, a building block for multiple high-value functional ingredients.

The goal of this action research is to support regional African multi-actor food system transformation efforts through the development of, and dialogue around, a practical guide on ‘Quality Criteria and Evaluation Approaches for Guiding the Impact of Foresight in Food Systems Transformation’.

The Food Systems Transformation Group at the University of Oxford will lead a major new scoping project exploring how the Wellcome Trust can most effectively support action-oriented research on sustainable and healthy food systems across the UK and Europe.

This project develops a UK roadmap for pulses, exploring how they can play a larger role in delivering healthier diets, more resilient farming systems, and wider environmental benefits. 

FoSTr provides a country support facility for food systems foresight and scenario analysis. The country-led and multi-actor foresight process aims to assist national food systems transformation.

How do we promote a healthier diet which has a lower environmental impact and also enhances local and national enterprise? By starting with the meal and working backwards through the supply chain to the grower.

The AFN Network+ aims to create plausible pathways, and practical, open science, to achieve net-zero through the agrifood system by 2050.

Working with Leicestershire County Council, we are exploring how to improve nutrient flows through food waste management, green waste and bio-solids.

This project combines the latest food system understanding with foresight capability to provide policy and practice guidance on food system resilience.

Embedding food resilience in agendas such as climate, planning and health as well as addressing the overlap between income and food access could help London's complex and fragile food system better meet the needs of its growing population.

Our work helped to consolidate food systems foresight capability in Ghana and Uganda in order to strengthen transformation planning towards more sustainable and resilient food systems.

SENTINEL was an interdisciplinary research project which sought to address the challenge of achieving ‘zero hunger’ in sub-Saharan Africa, while reducing inequalities and conserving ecosystems.

Global Food Security Programme (GFS), the UK’s cross government programme on food security research, funded 13 collaborative research projects which produced new evidence and recommendations for policy and practice.
