Overview

Global shipping is modelled, based on a database of more than 1,200 ports, AIS ship tracking data and bilateral trade data. This enables understanding of the impacts of climate and security shocks at ports and maritime chokepoints. OPSIS uses this global bilateral trade modelling to understand the impacts of systemic risk, like climate shocks to food supply. The team have also used the global transport data to analyse global trade in critical minerals, and to optimise the production of green ammonia for ship fuelling.

Projects

IMF-Oxford PortWatch platform

PortWatch is a new, high-impact online portal to monitor and simulate trade disruptions due to climate extremes and other shocks. Using satellite-based vessel data and big data analytics, the platform helps policymakers, analysts, and other public stakeholders assess the impact of disruptions to maritime trade.

Gallagher Research Centre: Global Ports, Shipping and Supply Chain Analysis

Bringing together academic researchers and industry experts in modeling, big data, and reinsurance, this initiative aims to advance methods in systemic risk modeling to better inform industry and policymakers on how to build more resilient trade networks in an increasingly volatile world.

The Systemic Resilience Initiative aims to advance practical solutions to manage shocks with the potential for major and prolonged economic disruption, severe human or economic impacts, and contagion.

Green ammonia for decarbonisation of global shipping

Researchers with expertise in chemical engineering, infrastructure, and public policy came together to plan for the UK’s transition to net zero shipping. They produced the first comprehensive and spatially granular global picture of supply and demand for the future (2050) green ammonia economy.
