A number of researchers from the Environmental Change Institute (ECI) are among more than 160 academics, environmental professionals and members of civil society who have signed an open letter to the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero concerning the proposed Rosebank and Jackdaw oil and gas fields.
The letter does not take a position on whether the licences should be granted. Instead, it calls for conditions to be attached to any future approvals requiring fossil fuel producers to take responsibility for the permanent storage of carbon dioxide, as a means of reconciling continued fossil fuel use with the UK's commitment to reach net zero by 2050.
Professor Myles Allen, Climate Programme lead at the ECI, is one of the letter's lead authors.
