Dr Sarah Darby and Dr Tina Fawcett were commissioned to write a think piece on the concept of sufficiency of energy and energy services.
Energy sufficiency is a new concept for many people: this paper introduces the ‘energy sufficiency doughnut’ – an image demonstrating what we mean by energy sufficiency. The image is an adaptation of the sustainable development doughnut, developed by Kate Raworth for Oxfam. Energy sufficiency is a state in which people’s basic needs for energy services are met equitably and ecological limits are respected.
