Our work examined the political ecology of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), and how this shaped FSC outcomes for biodiversity conservation and protection of local and indigenous community rights.

The geographic focus is on Canada, Russia and Sweden, all countries with large areas of boreal forest, and which rank first, second and fourth worldwide in their total FSC certified forest area. The project included a multi-scale examination of FSC standards and processes as a system of networked governance, with attention to:

  • Negotiations among stakeholders for formulating global and national FSC standards
  • The resulting standards
  • Audits of certified forest management
  • Assessments of outcomes related to ecological and social sustainability.
