Profile

Roger joined the School of Geography and the Environment in July 2015 and holds a BA in Human Geography and an MSc in Gerontology.

Roger is the Food Systems Programme Manager responsible for supporting the Programme Leader. The ECI Food Systems Programme is contributing to the University of Oxford’s broad view of food systems by increasing two-way interactions between food security and environment change. The research and training programme is led by John Ingram, therefore concerns not only all food system Activities from production to consumption, but also how these relate to both food security and environment Outcomes of these activities.

A substantive part of the work is supporting the Innovative Food Systems Teaching and Learning Project (IFSTAL) funded by HEFCE. The project will develop a substantial cohort of post-graduates trained in the new methodology and practice of ‘food systems’ thinking. This training will enhance their professional capability enabling these graduates to make a distinctive contribution to improving global and nation al food policies, practice and security. The training programme will be initially offered to Masters and PhD students already studying any aspect of food security within a pilot group of five English universities led by Oxford.

Roger’s role involves day-to-day management of the Programme by providing support to team members; liaising with consortium partners and funders on administrative, financial and contractual issues; organising conferences, workshops and meetings; and supporting the Programme Leader on proposals for new research projects.

Roger most recently worked in another department at the University of Oxford as a project manager on a programme of research and training for healthcare staff in the Thames Valley to improve patient safety. Previously he worked for the Audit Commission and Local Government Association managing programmes of research to help shape policymakers, and inform improvements in local public services.
