Profile

Fred joined OPSIS in May 2022. He is a senior research software engineer, working on modelling environmental risk to infrastructure systems. This involves software tool development and research to understand how a changing climate will impact water, transport, energy, etc. systems at global, regional and national levels.

Prior to the ECI Fred worked for the Institute for Environmental Analytics at the University of Reading. Here he worked principally on the backend of a software as a service for renewable energy generation planning, EnergyMetric. This website allowed users such as utilities staff, civil servants, energy developers, investors and students to define a scenario of generating assets and estimate likely power production at high temporal resolution using decades of Local Area Model weather data.

Fred completed a PhD in nuclear fusion research at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy as part of the York Plasma Institute. His research concerned the sources of uncertainty (and potential remedies) in the modelling of fusion device neutronics.
