New commentary from Richard Kipling, Researcher with the ECI’s research collaborative unit TABLE, examines how recent disruptions affecting the Strait of Hormuz have highlighted the UK food system’s reliance on imported fertiliser.

The piece, published by the University of Oxford, discusses what price shocks can—and cannot—do to drive change in agricultural systems, and argues that while such events expose vulnerabilities, they are unlikely on their own to trigger structural transformation in food production and supply chains.

It draws on TABLE research into regenerative agriculture and wider food system dynamics, and contributes to ongoing debates about resilience, input use, and pathways to more sustainable farming systems.
