Experts from around the world came together at the United Nations Office in Geneva on 19–20 February 2026 to develop a shared framework for monitoring progress during the first-ever UN Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026–2035). The two-day Monitoring and Tracking workshop brought together governments, multilateral organisations, NGOs, and academia to tackle challenges in governance, data, and indicators for sustainable transport outcomes.

Professor Jim Hall, Professor of Climate and Environmental Risk, and Lead of the ECI’s Oxford Programme for Sustainable Infrastructure Systems (OPSIS) at the Environmental Change Institute (ECI), played an active role in discussions, contributing to the collaborative framework and helping shape principles for a robust, knowledge-driven approach to tracking sustainable transport worldwide.

The workshop showcased OPSIS research to develop openly accessible transport datasets, building upon the recently released African Transport Systems Database  and the very successful PortWatch platform developed by OPSIS and the IMF.

Prof Hall said:

Availability of transport data will be transformed during the UN Decade for Sustainable Transport. This will make a huge difference to transport systems become more efficient, assessable, safe, equitable and sustainable. Our OPSIS research group continues to innovate towards those goals. It was fascinating to join with transport specialists and practitioners from around the world at the UN in Geneva to discuss how the UN Decade for Sustainable Transport should be monitored.”

The workshop, co-organised by Climate Compatible Growth (CCG), the SLOCAT Partnership on Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport, and UNECE, featured presentations, interactive sessions, and World Café-style discussions to explore existing monitoring frameworks and identify key gaps.
