Researchers from the Environmental Change Institute are playing a critical role in a pioneering rewilding project in southern Namibia.

Set in a dramatic landscape of rocky peaks and sandy plains, the project aims to restore ecological function across an area larger than Yellowstone National Park.

The project is led by Natural State, in partnership with the Orange River Karoo Conservation Area (ORKCA) and involves the development of a “rewilding credit”—a novel financial mechanism designed to support long-term ecological and economic resilience.

A recent field visit saw Prof Yadvinder Malhi, Ecosystems Programme Lead and Dr Nicola Stevens, Senior Researcher both from the Environmental Change Institute (ECI) and the Leverhulme Centre for Nature Recovery, among a group of researchers exploring the site and sharing ideas on biodiversity monitoring and innovative conservation finance.
