Dr Jesús Aguirre-Gutiérrez, Associate Professor and leader of the Biodiversity and Earth Observation (BioEO) group at the Environmental Change Institute, has been awarded a European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant for his project Tropical Forest Adaptation to a Changing Biosphere.
The ERC Consolidator scheme supports outstanding mid-career researchers pursuing groundbreaking projects across Europe. Jesús’ research will advance understanding of how tropical forests — among the world’s most critical and biodiverse ecosystems — respond and adapt to accelerating environmental change at a pan-tropical scale.
Dr Aguirre-Gutiérrez said: “I am delighted to have been awarded an ERC Consolidator Grant for the project Tropical Forest Adaptation to a Changing Biosphere. This work will explore the resilience of tropical forests at a pan-tropical scale, advancing our understanding of how these critical ecosystems respond to accelerating environmental change. I am deeply grateful to my collaborators and look forward to developing this project together in the years ahead.”
ERC Consolidator Grants are among the most prestigious and competitive research awards in Europe, recognising exceptional researchers with the potential to lead field-shaping work. They are awarded to just a small fraction of mid-career researchers across Europe.
Dr Aguirre-Gutiérrez is also affiliated with the ECI's research collaboration, the Leverhulme Centre for Nature Recovery.
