With energy bills still high and the push for low-carbon living gaining pace, many UK households are exploring ways to cut heating costs while reducing emissions. A new tool—the Heat Pump Cost Calculator—aims to make that decision easier. Developed with input from Dr Jan Rosenow, ECI Energy Programme lead and an expert in energy systems and policy, this calculator offers personalised estimates of how much you could save by switching from a gas boiler to a heat pump. Here Dr Rosenow explains how.
As someone who has spent years researching energy systems and advising on policy, I am excited to share a new tool that could help UK households save money while supporting the transition to cleaner heating. Together with the start-up Ambient, where I serve as a board member, and in collaboration with Which?, we have developed a calculator that estimates how much households can save by switching from a gas boiler to a heat pump.
Our findings are encouraging: the average three-person household in the UK could save up to £465 a year on heating costs by making the switch. These savings are not just theoretical—they are based on detailed analysis I have conducted at the Regulatory Assistance Project, where I am a senior advisor, and at Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute.
The timing of this tool is significant. The UK government has just announced a consultation on expanding the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which offers property owners up to £7,500 off the cost of replacing fossil fuel heating with a low-carbon alternative. This is a real opportunity for households to take advantage of financial support and make a positive change for both their wallets and the environment.
From my research, it’s clear that heat pumps can save people money—especially when they are installed well and operated efficiently, ideally on a heat pump tariff. The calculator we’ve developed is designed to be straightforward and practical. By entering a few details about your home and current heating system, you can get a personalised estimate of your potential savings.
I believe that empowering people with information is key to accelerating the shift to low-carbon heating. With energy prices still a concern for many, and the need to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels more urgent than ever, heat pumps can offer a solution that is both cost-effective and climate-friendly.
If you’re considering making the switch, now is a great time to explore your options. With government incentives and tools like our calculator, the path to cleaner, cheaper heating is clearer than ever.
