The ECI is building on its links with the University of São Paulo (USP) entering a new partnership in research and education.
USP is Brazil’s top ranked University and this new collaboration focuses on some of the key research areas of the ECI including sustainable agriculture, energy transition and environmental change impacting the Amazon.
Dr Manoela Machado, a post doc researcher at the ECI is particularly excited by the collaboration as she studied at USP herself. She said:
Both Universities are strong institutions of research and education. USP is the strongest university in Latin America. A collaboration between them to facilitate research and promote scientific and technological knowledge is advantageous to everyone involved as well as to the larger fields of research.
ECI and USP signed a letter of intention to further the collaboration. We had productive discussions about the possible lines of research where more focused programs/collaborations can be formed. This type of partnership reinforces the need for dialogue between universities and policymakers and the support of evidence-based policy.”

The latest collaboration will bring together a number of programmes and researchers at the ECI highlighting the need for multidisciplinary collaboration to tackle environmental concerns.
The new agreement will also see increased movement of scientists and students between the ECI and USP – with researchers spending time in each other’s laboratories in Oxford and São Paulo, working on joint projects and sharing knowledge and data.
The new partnership was further discussed during a recent visit to the Brazilian Embassy in London by Prof Carlos Carlotti, the Vice-Chancellor of USP and Prof Serio Proença, Provost for International Cooperation at USP. This opportunity stems from an earlier visit from the Brazilian Ambassador to the UK Antonio de Aguiar Patriota.
The signing of the letter of intention comes ahead of the 2024 G20 Summit in Brazil in July.
