Skills-first. Systems-minded. Justice-centred. Rooted in your context.

The Climate Solutions & Strategies (CSS) programme builds the practical skills to lead climate action wherever you work. Over 14 weeks, you’ll practise analysing climate systems, evaluating and designing solutions, communicating for action, and leading through complexity, applying each skill to your own role and context. This partnership between the Environmental Change Institute and Skill Up For Earth brings together people from diverse backgrounds and career stages to build a robust overview of how to understand and address climate change in practical terms.

Climate action requires a rare blend of scientific grounding, systems thinking, political and economic fluency, practical tools, and the capacity to lead and collaborate across differences. This programme teaches foundational and future-oriented climate skills that employers, communities, and movements need and value, while also helping you identify how your existing skills can have the greatest impact.

The programme is anchored in four foundational competencies:

  • Systems Analysis: map the drivers, feedbacks and stakeholders behind a climate challenge.
  • Integrating Solutions: weigh options on impact, feasibility, equity and trade-offs, and combine them into a strategy.
  • Communication for Climate Action: explain climate evidence like risks and clean energy transitions to decision-makers, colleagues and communities.
  • Leadership and Personal Resilience: lead change while sustaining yourself and others.

“The curriculum was accessible and gave me the opportunity to critically think of many climate solutions across lens of scale, justice, feasibility and equity without being too technical. It also gave me the confidence to design a global strategic programme addressing climate in my role with a nuanced lens.”

Rikhiya Bannerjee, Senior Programme Manager, Swiss Re Foundation, India

Who this course is for

The majority of learners in this course are early- to senior-level professionals across a very diverse range of roles, organisations and countries. Ideally, you will have at least two years of work experience to get the most out of this course, though recent graduates are also welcome to apply.

You will need a high-school level competency in maths and science. But don’t worry if you haven’t done either in a long time! No climate background is needed.

Many organisations cover the fees for this course via learning and development/training allowances. Check with your HR department or supervisor when you apply.

A rich learning experience

CSS provides a small group experience supported intensively by experienced faculty. The course consists of:

  • Live expert workshops, led by skilled practitioners from around the world.
  • Self-paced learning through interactive multimedia lessons, case studies, and quizzes.
  • Small-group live (Zoom) studios to share and apply learnings to personal contexts.
  • Optional deep-dive labs for more experienced learners.
  • Specialised tracks on a range of topics for the last three weeks—you will pick one to complete.
  • Networking with peers from a range of industries and geographies.
  • Assignments including a climate risks assessment for your country, a clean energy presentation, and personal skills and career mapping.
  • A project of your choice that will directly help you advance in your career.

“The Climate Solutions programme sharpened how I translate carbon policy and climate strategy into decisions that businesses can act on. I left with clearer thinking, stronger tools, and the confidence to challenge superficial sustainability and drive measurable change. This experience raised my standard for what meaningful climate work should look like.”

Inemesit Ukpanah, ESG Strategy and Marketing Lead, Greennect, Netherlands

Unique skills-led curriculum

  • Course content is built by leading experts with a focus on knowledge and skills that are directly applicable to climate careers.

    Foundations

    The first ten weeks involve:

    • Introduction and orientation: Set personal learning and career goals, connect with your cohort, and use insights from the neuroscience of learning to make your study more effective.
    • Mental models for tackling climate change: Use systems mapping to break down the “super wicked problem” of climate change, and analyse how competing climate worldviews shape the solutions people support.
    • The science of climate change: Explain the mechanisms behind climate change, interpret how they’re measured and analysed, and turn climate data into clear, accurate visualisations.
    • Human dimensions: Analyse how economics, politics and justice shape climate policy and governance, evaluate compliance carbon markets, and map stakeholder power and influence to identify where change can happen.
    • Climate risks, impacts and decision-making under uncertainty: Assess climate risks and impacts, from tipping points to local effects, and use and critique forecasting tools to make sound decisions under uncertainty.
    • Framing and comparing climate solutions: Evaluate climate solutions and their trade-offs for resilience and mitigation in real-world simulations, weighing scale, feasibility and equity.
    • Clean energy transitions: Understand how the energy system works, build technical competency, and analyse energy transitions through a systems lens.
    • Sustainable and resilient food systems: Apply a systems lens to food and agriculture, and assess the practical steps and technologies needed to scale agroecology.
    • Carbon dioxide removal, nature-based solutions and solar radiation management: Use in-depth case studies to critically evaluate the potential, risks and limits of these climate interventions, including nature-based carbon markets.

    Assignments

    Three required assignments cover:

    • Climate risk assessment: Conduct a climate risk assessment for your country using an open-source tool, interpret the stakes, and present it to a decision-maker.
    • Clean energy deep dive: Research and present a case study analysing a specific energy transition in a country, region or city of your choice.
    • Personal skills and career mapping: Audit your skills, map them onto areas of climate work, and plan where you can have the greatest climate impact.

    Tracks

The last four weeks involve ‘specialising’ in one of these tracks:

    • Building a Corporate Sustainability Strategy
    • Climate Action Planning for Cities and Communities
    • Renewable Energy Business and Finance
    • Climate Communications
    • Designing for Climate Impact in Tech and Engineering

    Final project

Bring your skills together in a project on a real-world climate challenge of your choice, with guidance from faculty. You choose the theme, medium and approach, and you finish with a piece of work you can use to move forward in your career.

I found incredible value in learning alongside leaders from across sectors who are tackling some of today's most complex infrastructure and energy challenges. The programme strengthened my ability to connect policy, finance, technology, and implementation in ways that can expand affordable, reliable energy systems while meeting rapidly growing demand.”
