Organisation/Company Description

The Forest Trust (TFT) is a not for profit organization that helps companies make sure their supply chains are clean and free from illegal or environmentally damaging practices. We are establishing a global initiative to support 3rd party monitoring and verification of company commitments through collaboration with local civil society organisations and experts, working in collaboration with geographical and thematic experts worldwide.

Project Details

As part of this process we are looking to employ an intern to review sets of criteria based upon international standards and best practices, in multi-commodity supply chains involving hundreds of companies, and using these criteria help us develop practical indicators on topics ranging from High Conservation Value and High Carbon Stock forests (HCV and HCS), labour practices, Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), and conflicts. This work is coupled with the creation of a technology and information platform linking information from the monitors through to commercial investors in this monitoring.

Key Tasks

  • Research current international quality standards across a range of products including palm oil, rubber, soy and sugar
  • Compare and contrast these standards to establish a recommended set for TFT
  • Liaise with thematic experts globally
  • Present findings to relevant teams both in the UK and around the world

Anticipated Learnings

  • To be part of a new and unique approach to improving supply chains throughout the world
  • Gain an understanding of supply chains from producer to retailer and the issues involved in measuring the effect of various environmental initiatives
  • An opportunity to present analysis to senior members of the TFT team


  • The intern will be a part of the wider TFT UK team
  • They will be managed by John Nelson and supported by other members of the TFT UK team

Applicant Profile

  • Graduates preferred but undergraduates will still be considered
  • Ability to analyse data
  • An interest in technology and systems
  • Background in sustainable development, environmental management, ecology
  • Knowledge of certification, standards and best practices in agricultural commodities
  • Excellent research skills
  • Proficient in Excel
  • Ability to write and present reports
  • Good communication skills
  • Able to operate from our offices in Southampton
