The MSc ECM Alumni Network
The MSc in Environmental Change and Management began in 1994 and established an alumni network within its first year.
The network was formed for alumni to continue their strong links with the department, and to develop links amongst the alumni group. The network shares information on job vacancies, academic research and social activities. Membership is open to all graduates of the course. The network currently includes more than 500 alumni spanning 67 countries.
The alumni are invited to an annual dinner, major departmental events and various social functions throughout the year. The alumni network is also encouraged to meet and network at events where we expect a large alumni presence, such as international climate negotiations.
The alumni remain involved with the department via collaboration with current Oxford staff and through their encouragement of current students through the MSc programme, by offering lectures and site visits, work placements and scholarships.
The Environmental Change Institute is very proud of its alumni network. It remains strong and loyal, and demonstrates the very best in collaborative working.

Past Events
Alumni Dinner, 3 September 2011
Our 2011 dinner was attended by almost 100 people and held at Oriel College. We were delighted to have as our guest speaker Gareth Morgan, ECM Alum 2003 and now MP for the Democratic Alliance Parliament of the Republic of South Africa. Gareth spoke about how his career has developed since completing the ECM course and of the challenges of political leadership in the environmental sector. Excited chatter kept away the rain as we sipped champagne in the quad, and as always, we were never in short supply of conversation over dinner! During dinner, Tom Thornton gave thanks to the teaching staff for their hard efforts during the year and encouraged the newly completed ECM class to interact with the alumni community, and wished them well with their future careers. Jim Hall was introduced to the alumni as new ECI Director, who spoke of the ECM as being an integral part of the ECI, which celebrates its 20th year in 2011. Thanks so much to everyone who came to the dinner, another wonderful occasion to reunite and network, and to celebrate the hard work and success of the MSc ECM course and the ECI.
Alumni Dinner and Drinks. UNFCCC COP16, Cancun, December 2010
At the UNFCCC Conference of Parties in Cancun (COP 16) ECI graduates were members of national delegations for 7 countries as well as the Alliance of Small Island States, Asian Development Bank, European Environment Agency, World Food Programme and UN Development Programme.
Over 30 alumni were present at COP16 in a professional capacity, and we were delighted that 20 of those managed to find time in their hectic schedule to join ECI staff for dinner during the negotiations. The large number of alumni present clearly demonstrates that the MSc has real impact on those who graduate from the course, and that the course helps to nurture excellent professionals.
MSc ECM Alumni Dinner 2010
The 2010 alumni dinner was held at Exeter College. The dinner was preceded by the panel discussion "Winning back the Planet: from Artists to Accountants; from Green to REDD" with speakers Angela Palmer, Diana Liverman and Leo Johnson, to coincide with the Ghost Forest exhibition.
As always, the dinner was a great success with 120 guests, providing alumni with the opportunity to reunite with old classmates and to network with others in their field of work. The ECI would like to thank all alumni, staff and guests for their attendance.
Alumni Dinner and Drinks. UNFCCC COP15, Copenhagen, December 2009
At the UNFCCC Conference of Parties in Copenhagen (COP 15) ECI graduates were members of national delegations for 7 countries (Australia, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Grenada, Pakistan, Turkey) as well as the Alliance of Small Island States, Asian Development Bank, European Environment Agency, and UN Development Programme.
In total over 60 alumni were present at COP15 in a professional capacity, and we were delighted that 50 of those joined us for an ECI dinner during the negotiations. The large number of alumni present clearly demonstrates that the MSc has real impact on those who graduate from the course, and that the course helps to nurture excellent professionals.
Alumni Dinner. 5 September 2009
The 2009 alumni dinner was held at Harris Manchester College. There were 110 people in attendance; a mix of students, alumni and teaching staff. The pre-dinner speaker was Dr Jan Dusik, ECM alumnus of 2002, and now First Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Environment of the Czech Republic. He spoke of his time on the ECM course, his career development since the course, and the challenges of his current position, which it was hoped was an inspiration for the new graduates. The evening, as always, was a great success as a professional, yet informal dinner where old classmates had a chance to share news, and network. The ECI would like to thank all of the alumni and teaching staff for attending the dinner, and also Harris Manchester for their hospitality.
Alumni Dinner. 6 September 2008
The 2008 dinner was the alumni dinner of the century! Over 220 people attended the dinner, with several alumni making a special effort to attend. The dinner marked the retirement of John Boardman as MSc Director and the handover to the new MSc Director Thomas Thornton. There was lots of extra fun at the dinner, with slideshows of alumni and John & Brenda through the years, a sing-along and special presentations to John for all of his hard efforts.
The Boardman Symposium. 6 September 2008
The Future of Land Degradation and A Manifesto for a Low Carbon Future both took place to mark the many aspects of John and Brenda Boardman’s careers and both events were well attended, and contained a mixture of new research and fun. Full details of the symposium are available on this website.
