Profile

I am a Biologist, currently doing my Doctorate research at the Environmental Change Institute, Oxford University. My interests focus on tropical forest ecosystems and human dimensions, more specifically in the Amazon.

During my undergraduate degree, at the "Universidade Estadual de Campinas" (UNICAMP, 1997 to 2001), Brazil, I was interested in plant taxonomy and field expeditions, more specifically with distribution of herbs in flooded areas. The project I was involved in had the main objective of generating a field guide book for Sao Paulo State. Download the guide book (to be published in October 2007).

For my MSc, my focus changed to regional-large scale studies, looking at natural and anthropogenic land cover dynamics. At the National Institute for Space Research (INPE, 2002 to 2004) I had my first contact with satellite derived data, and I started to study the Amazon. My study site was the Mato Grosso State – Southern Brazilian Amazon, where I worked on many field work expeditions. I also had the opportunity to go to the University of Maryland for almost 3 months, as part of a collaboration in the LBA project (Large Scale Biosphere Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia). My major scientific findings were related to deforestation processes, including a validation for the DETER system (Near real time deforestation detection project), development of new methodologies to study vegetation phenology and detecting burn scars, and techniques for land cover mapping using multitemporal data.

In my current research, I am looking at the entire Amazon basin, focusing on interactions among tropical ecosystems, human actions and global atmospheric changes. I have a particular interest in multidisciplinary work, combining field techniques surveys with satellite remote sensing data and modelling.

Research Interests

In my Ph.D. I will investigate the integration of remote sensing techniques with field ecological data to generate new approaches to the remote sensing of tropical forests. I will take advantage of the unique RAINFOR dataset of tropical forest inventories. This dataset is based on an international network which monitors forest biomass and dynamics across the Amazon. First, I will evaluate the landscape context of the RAINFOR field sites, to test whether the regional variations in wood productivity, wood specific density and biomass attributed to the RAINFOR network could be driven by landscape biases in plot location. Then I will investigate the vegetation structural parameters in relation to spectral properties of remote sensing data. This is the first time that such a large field dataset for the Amazon is available with the plots geographically located with high accuracy in the GIS. I will evaluate the vegetation response to the 2005 Amazon drought event, using a time-series of vegetation indices derived from satellite images combined with field data to examine canopy stress of the vegetation in the Amazon. I will then investigate the rate of deforestation of primary forest conversion in the Amazon in a multi-temporal time series, exploring drivers and evaluating the role of conservation areas in the different regions. Using my field data to validate the land cover change maps and information about the fate of the deforested areas, I will combine the data on forest structural properties and land cover change to model carbon emissions in the Amazon. My research will contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between the tropical forest and the global carbon cycle and carbon budget.
