Participatory forest management for herbal medicinal production in Peru

Spanish En español

The first phase of the project is now finished, after recently holding the final workshop where the bi-national project team, (University of Oxford and Centro EORI), together with representatives from each community, presented the results of the project, including the participatory management plan for the sustainable production of medicinal plants, a first for Peru. We also presented a series of lessons learnt from the past three years, and had an interesting and fruitful discussion with those present.

During the production of the management plan we coordinated closely with the Peruvian Natural Resources Institute (INRENA), as well as the Institute of Investigation of the Peruvian Amazon (IIAP), and with them we have developed the terms of reference to guide future management and production of medicinal plants. The management plan can be downloaded below in spanish, and the terms of reference will be available very shortly.

The book of the use and preparation of medicinal plants, authored by the communities in four languages, has now been published and a copy given to each family. The people themselves hold the authors’ rights and their traditional knowledge is protected under Peruvian law, the information having been verified by the government body responsable for Intellectual Property Rights (INDECOPI) prior to publication.

We continue looking for funding in order to start the second phase of the project, which will focus on two communities who have expressed an interest in putting the management plan into practise, and who have the organisation and committment to establish and run community enterprises for the sustainable produc tion of medicinal plants.
