Energy Research Topics: Transport
In transport and environment, particular emphasis is placed on understanding the social, economic and environmental implications of transport over both time and space. Our work ranges in geographic scale from the local to the global whilst the full spectrum of quantitative and qualitative research techniques is deployed.
Latest Projects
- Calculating The Carbon Dioxide Emissions of Flights
2009
A methodology for a proposed industry standard for calculationg emissions from flights.
- IMPACT: Interactive manual of policies to abate carbon from transport
2007 - 2009
A web-based catalogue of transport policies that combines a moderated "wiki" approach with an evidence-based global review on the potential for carbon reduction in the transport sector.
- iConnect - On your bike!
2008 - 2013
A multi-institutional study to evaluate the impacts of a £150 million project designed to revitalise walking and cycling across the UK.
- Predict and Decide: aviation, climate change and UK policy
Nov 05 - Oct 06
An assessment of the implications of aviation growth in the UK
- Integrated Travel Emissions Profiles
Completed Mar 06
This project has investigated greenhouse gas pollutant emissions and related climate change impacts from transport at the personal, household and local levels.
- Vehicle Environmental Rating Schemes
Completed 00
Making recommendations on the content and format of a fuel efficiency label for all new passenger cars.
- Travel Emissions Profiles
Completed 97
Travel emission profiles have been developed for individuals by studying their journey patterns, based on 2 Oxfordshire villages. These profiles enabled a better understanding of travel behaviour by studying individuals rather than establishing averages.
- The Costs of Rural Travel (SMART)
Completed 96
A project to addresses some of the issues raised by recent increases in traffic in the countryside alongside a decrease in bus services.

This is the first in a series of proposed initiatives developed by the Demand Reduction theme of the UK Energy Research Centre. They are intended to make a useful contribution in reducing carbon emissions by 2010, and are designed to be relatively easily for the Government or local authorities to implement. Legislative changes or expenditure needed would be small in nature, hence the title ‘Quick Hits’.
