Energy Research Topics: Lights and Appliances

We create detailed computer models for electricity use, based on the ownership levels, energy efficiency and usage patterns for different appliances. This enables us to create detailed scenarios for the impact of lights and appliances in the future, and to influence EU and UK policy. Our approach is based on Market Transformation theory and evidence that product policies can lead to significant CO2 savings.

Latest Projects

  • Low Carbon ICT
    Oct 07 - Apr 09

A study of how energy and cost savings are achievable through developing technologies that reduce ICT carbon emissions.

  • EU SAVE: Boilers
    03 - Jun 05

Europe's central heating boilers account for two-thirds of domestic CO2 emissions. Research by the ECI and partners aims to decrease the electricity component of this consumption, through the EU's energy efficiency SAVE Programme.

  • Energy Plus
    02 - Aug 04

Energy-plus fridges and freezers use less than half the energy used by average appliances, saving money for consumers and reducing carbon emissions. This project promotes the development and use of such appliances throughout the European Union.

  • EU SAVE: Water Heating
    00 - 02

In collaboration with 12 EU organisations in the SAVE II programme, this project examines the energy saving potential of domestic water heating.

  • EU SAVE: Circulation Pumps
    00 - 02

As part of the SAVE II programme the project examines the energy saving potential for domestic circulation pumps. The report provides a foundation for policy by creating an energy use information system for domestic hot water appliances.

  • EU SAVE: Ovens
    99 - 01

As part of the SAVE II programme this project was to identify policy options to improve the efficiency of domestic ovens.
