Assessment of the potential of ecosystem-based approaches to climate change adaptation and mitigation in Europe

This project

  • Took stock of current examples of working with nature - ecosystem-based approaches to climate change mitigation and adaptation in Europe;
  • Screened adaptation strategies on local, regional, national and transnational levels in Europe and assessed to what extent these adaptation strategies consider ecosystem-based approaches;
  • Identified the obstacles that prevent the integration and made recommendations on how to overcome those obstacles;
  • Identified success factors enhancing the integration of ecosystem-based approaches and good practice examples; and
  • Conducted a cost-benefits analysis of selected case studies (to assess their costs/ costeffectiveness) and compared the results to costs of traditional engineered approaches.
