Studentship 1

Name:

Carol Andrea Lòpez Ropero

From:

Colombia

Tutors:

Bart Kruijt, Regina Luizão, Marteen Waterloo

Proposal:

Carol is undertaking an MSc programme at INPA, Manaus, Brazil, and perform field research, supervised by Regina Luizao and Bart on the relationship of roots and mycorrhyza with soil respiration and carbon dynamics, in tropical lowland forest of Central Amazon (Cuieiras reserve) and the Colombian Amazon (Amacayacu reserve, Leticia).

Studentship 2

Name:

Diego Navarrete

From:

Colombia

Tutors:

Jerome Chave

Proposal:

Diego is developing a project to compare leaf, seed, and fruit production between the same Colombian site and Nouragues, in French Guiana on the other side of the Amazon region, where Chave has a long-established field site with a high frequency, multi-year record of litterfall.

Studentship 3

Name:

Eliana María Jiménez Rojas

From:

Colombia

Tutors:

Jon Lloyd

Proposal:

Eliana is developing a project in the Parque Nacional Amacayacu, in SE Colombia, to assess the structure, dynamics, and productivity of a western Amazonian forest (to date such work has been completely lacking in the region), and, eventually, to compare the results with similar projects using the same standards being developed by PAN-AMAZON European, Brazilian, and Peruvian investigators. This work will be directly comparable with parallel studies by Pan-Amazonia fellows across Amazonia in Brazil (11) and Peru (10).

Studentship 4

Name:

Juliana Stropp

From:

Brasil

Tutors:

Hans ter Steege

Proposal:

Juliana is working on examining patterns of tree diversity in tropical forest plots, and conducting a statistical analysis of high this diversity is related to climate, soil, topography, altitude and other factors.

Studentship 5

Name:

Liana O. Anderson

From:

Brasil

Tutors:

Yadvinder Malhi

Proposal:

Liana is developing remote sensing techniques to explore the relationship between plot-based studies and the landscape, at variety of sites across Amazonia (in Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Bolivia). This will enable plot-focused studies to be placed in a broader landscape and regional context. She is based at the Brazilian Space Agency (INPE), but will visit Oxford University for six months in 2005. She will join Malhi on fieldwork in Peru and Brazil in Jan and Feb 2005.

Studentship 6

Name:

Luis Suarez

From:

Peru

Tutors:

Bart Kruijt, Carlos Llerena

Proposal:

Luis is undertaking an MSc with La Molina University in Peru and execute a field research supervised by Carlos Llerena from La Molina University and Bart Kruijt from Alterra, on the effects of fire on soil carbon dynamics, along a transect from the upper Andes through Upper Amazon to Rondonia in Brazil.

Studentship 7

Name:

Carlos Alberto Quesada

From:

Brazil

Tutors:

Jonathan Lloyd

Proposal:

Carlos Alberto Quesada who enrolled as a Ph.D student in the Geography Department at University of Leeds from 1 October 2004 and recently commenced thesis will be on 'Soil-Vegetation Interactions across Amazonia'. He will study the relationship between soils data and forest structure and dynamics from the RAINFOR field sites across Amazonia.

Studentship 8

Name:

Romilda Paiva

From:

Brazil

Tutors:

Jonathan Lloyd

Proposal:

Romilda was supported from 1 January to 31 December 2004 as a Masters student at Instituto National de Pesquisas da Amazônia, Manaus, Brazil Paiva is currently writing up her Masters thesis on 'Foliar and soil nutrients across the Brazilian Amazon'.

Studentship 9

Name:

Everton Almeida

From:

Brazil

Tutors:

Yadvinder Malhi, Samuel Almeida (MPEG)

Proposal:

Everton was funded to investigate in detail the relationships between forest photosynthesis, leaf area, tree growth and death rates, root production and soil carbon release at two forest plots of contrasting soil fertility at the Caxiuana forest in eastern Amazonia (Para, Brazil). He was based at the Emilio Goeldi museum in Belem, Brazil. For personal reasons, Everton was replaced at start of 2005 by João (11). Paulo (12) and Alan (13).

Studentship 10

Name:

Javier Espejo

From:

Peru

Tutors:

Yadvinder Malhi (UOXFORD), Norma Salinas (Univ. San Antonio Abad, Peru)

Proposal:

Javier is funded to investigate in detail the relationships between forest photosynthesis, leaf area, tree growth and death rates, root production and soil carbon release at two forest plots of contrasting soil fertility at the Tambopata forest in south-western Amazonia (Madre de Dios, Peru). He is based at the University of San Antonio Abad in Cuzco, Peru. This work will be directly comparable with parallel studies by Pan-Amazonia fellows across Amazonia in Colombia (3) and Brazil (9). (12), (13).

Studentship 11

Name:

João de Athaydes S. Junior

From:

Brazil

Tutors:

Yadvinder Malhi (UOXFORD), Samuel Almeida (MPEG)

Proposal:

João will continue Everton's work (9). He is funded to investigate in detail the relationships between forest photosynthesis, leaf area, tree growth and death rates, root production and soil carbon release at two forest plots of contrasting soil fertility at the Caxiuana forest in eastern Amazonia (Para, Brazil). He is based at the Emilio Goeldi museum in Belem, Brazil. This work will be directly comparable with parallel studies by Eliana (3) and Javier (10) Pan-Amazonia fellows.

Studentship 12

Name:

Paulo Henrique Lopes Gonçalves

From:

Brazil

Tutors:

Yadvinder Malhi (UOXFORD), Samuel Almeida (MPEG)
