COP14 in Poznan, December 2008

A significant set of the ECI's activities and projects relate to understanding, examining and critiquing the issue of international climate policy. These projects include studies into the governance of climate offsets, the Clean Development Mechanism, tropical forestry, and the IPCC; as well as wider influences from the media, non state actors and cities etc.

Approaching 40 researchers and students with affiliation to the ECI will be attending the COP negotiations in Poznan. Those attending do so in varying capacities: to undertake research, consultancy contracts and as observers.

Research at the negotiations: The Role of Non-Nation-State Actors (NNSAs) in the UNFCCC Negotiations

During the conference, ECI and Tyndall researchers will be looking into the role of non-nation-state actors in the UNFCCC Negotiations. To undertake this research, Tyndall/ECI staff and students will monitor many of the side events and document the types of discussions taking place using a structured questionnaire. New climate initiatives for 2008

In November 2008 Professor Yadvinder Malhi launched the Oxford Centre for Tropical Forests; a topic high on the agenda for international discussion following the Bali negotiations in 2007. A number of Professor Malhi's research team will be attending Poznan COP to observe take part in discussions about forest governance and climate policy.

In 2008 the ECI also established a China Energy and Environment Programme, led by Dr Jimin Zhao to examine the evolution and effectiveness of China’s environmental and energy governance during a period of rapid socio-economic transformation.
