Profile

Martino Tran is a Oxford Martin School Fellow at the Institute for Carbon and Energy Reduction in Transport (ICERT), the Transport Studies Unit (TSU), Environmental Change Institute (ECI) and Faculty Associate at the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, University of Oxford. Martino currently advises ECI and TSU graduate students and interns on transport and energy policy and technology. He has successfully networked with various departments across the University of Oxford and other UK universities on large-scale research bids in the fields of energy and transport. He has been an expert reviewer for EPSRC for research in low carbon transport technologies and has advised the UK research council’s strategy for marine shipping and climate change. He is a peer reviewer for the International Journal of Transport Reviews. Martino is also currently involved in ESRC’s Energy Security Research Cluster and has advised the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and International Energy Agency (IEA) on energy security and transport.

Martino has nearly 10 years of professional research experience including 5 years of management in the sustainability impacts of advanced technological diffusion for large-scale transport and energy investments including the Vancouver Port Authority (VPA) terminal expansion, the Richmond-Airport-Vancouver (RAV) Rapid Transit Line and Canadian wind power, co-generation and offshore oil and gas developments. Internationally, he has assisted the UNDP Regional Centre for Central and Eastern Europe in Strategic Environmental Assessment, and the United States Department of Treasury, UNDP Vietnam and the Ministry of Industry, Vietnam in sustainable energy initiatives. He is expert in stakeholder analysis and strategic planning for complex multi-disciplinary project developments and has been contributor or lead author of over 25 publications for Canadian government, academia and various international organizations. Martino’s academic training is in engineering and environmental sciences. He completed graduate studies at Lund University, Sweden specializing in Sustainable Energy under the mentorship of Professor Thomas B. Johansson, a Convening Lead Author for the IPCC, Co-Chair of the Global Energy Assessment, and a pioneer in the field of Energy for Sustainable Development.

Current Research

Martino's current research focuses on the system-wide effects of large-scale deployment of low-carbon transport technologies to meet climate change and energy security policy. Martino is also collaborating with the Lower Carbon Futures Group, Environmental Change Institute (ECI), and the UK Energy Research Centre’s (UKERC) Demand Reduction Theme on scenario analysis and energy modelling of the UK transport sector.
