Profile

I am a Visiting Research Associate with the Oxford Centre for Tropical Forests at the ECI, working with the Forest Governance group under the supervision of Connie McDermott. My academic background is in Agronomy and Crop Sciences, with research in Agroforestry Systems but I have been directly involved for the last 15 years in the development and implementation of tools to encourage social and environmental changes towards sustainable development in the Forestry and Agricultural sectors of Brazil. My home institution is IMAFLORA, a Brazilian NGO founded in 1995.

At ECI I intend to update and improve my theoretical knowledge of Land Use Governance, especially certification systems and their role to foster positive changes in land use. I also aim to share the practical experience I have accumulated as a policy person in the last years. I will contribute to the project about Equity in Environmental Services, applying the Equity Framework to the implementation of FSC in Brazil.

I graduated in Agronomy in 1993 at the University of São Paulo (Brazil). I got my Master’s Degree in Environmental Engineering in 1996 and concluded my PhD in Crop Sciences in 2003, also at the University of São Paulo, but with activities at Purdue University (USA) and ICRAF Southeast Asia (Indonesia). I joined the Brazilian NGO IMAFLORA in 1996, to launch the Agricultural activities of the organization. In 2003 I became IMAFLORA´s Deputy Executive Director and I acted as its Executive Director from 2005 to 2010. I have been involved in the institutional development, management and strategic planning of the organization. I have participated in the development and implementation of socioenvironmental standards and certification systems such as the FSC, the Sustainable Agriculture Network and the ISEAL Alliance. In Brazil I have directly participated in the creation of the Soy Moratorium and other civil society initiatives to improve governance and transparency in public policies and the private sector.
