ECI Energy Research Theme

Profile

I am visiting ECI for nine months as a CEU/FCO Chevening scholar. During this period I will join the research on the SUPERGEN project that investigates how the electricity network will function if the generation is highly distributed and what is needed to achieve this. I am contributing to the project by doing research on the existing policies and barriers in the UK and by participating in the debate of what new policies should be developed to foster such large deployment by 2050. My research at the ECI will also complement the work on my PhD at the Central European University (CEU) – an international university situated in Budapest, Hungary.

The topic of my dissertation at the CEU is: Developing Sustainable Energy Systems: Policies, Barriers and Prospects of Distributed Electricity Generation in Bulgaria and my main supervisor is Prof. Diana Urge-Vorsatz. In my research I am using multidisciplinary methods to analyze the current policies and barriers in Bulgaria and I also do a comparison study with the UK situation. As an outcome I am aiming at creating a comprehensive policy framework for the promotion of distributed generation in Bulgaria.

I have a MSc degree in Ecology and Environmental Protection from Sofia University, Bulgaria and a MSc degree on Environmental Sciences and Policy from the Central European University, Hungary. In addition, I have been taking short courses on energy and environmental protection policy and legislation, and on leadership in Germany, Norway, Romania, Hungary, and Bulgaria.

I have participated in several projects financed under the Fifth and Sixth Framework Programme, by the European Parliament, and under the PHARE preaccession programme. I have worked for several environmental NGOs in Bulgaria, as research assistant for the CEU in Budapest, and as an energy expert at the Black Sea Regional Energy Centre - an intergovernmental organization of the countries of the Black Sea region and the Balkans, based in Sofia. I was also a traineeship for the European Commission, DG Energy and Transport in Brussels.
