Guy consults independently on EU environmental policy, programming and knowledge exchange. He is Director Europe at The Environment Bank Ltd, a company at the forefront of emerging ecosystems markets in the UK. Guy was appointed by the Secretary of State for Environment as an Independent Member of the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (statutory adviser to UK government on UK and international nature conservation). He also sits on the Steering Committee of the European Environment and Sustainable Development Advisory Councils. He chairs EURAPMON, a European Science Foundation ‘Research Networking Programme’ on ‘Monitoring for and with raptors in Europe’, and is an evaluator for the EC Research Executive Agency.
From 2002-07, Guy was Principal Administrator Biodiversity Policy at the European Commission, DG Environment. In this capacity, he was architect of the 2006 EU policy which introduced the concept of ecosystem services to the EU acquis and strengthened attention to the economic value of nature. He played a key role in launching the study on The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB). He also created a multi-million euro portfolio of science-to-policy projects addressing key issues such as ecosystem fragmentation, and biodiversity and climate change.
Prior to joining the Commission, Guy was a director in the International Development Services division of Environmental Resources Management (ERM) for whom he created a natural resources and biodiversity business with donor clients (World Bank, EC, DFID, etc.). In his early career he pioneered, for BirdLife International, a major conservation and development project among remote, tribal communities in the Pakistan Himalaya and led numerous research expeditions, making a series of ecological discoveries.
Guy Duke has authored many reports, policy papers, technical and research proposals, peer-reviewed papers and popular articles. He has mobilised over €20 million for natural resources management and biodiversity projects under his direction.
