With term now ended, 30 students from across five collaborating HE institutions gathered at the University of Reading on Sunday 3 July to kick off the inaugural Innovative Food Systems Teaching and Learning (IFSTAL) Summer School.

Beginning with an introductory session and 'Systems Thinking' game (pictured above), the week-long course features presentations from a range of speakers from academia, NGOs, policy and business. As well as hearing what the experts have to say, students are given the opportunity to see ideas put in to practice during visits to Waitrose Head Office, Crowmarsh Battle Farms, Tolhusrt Organic and the University of Reading Farm, as well as apply their learning to problems - weilding pens and post-it notes in group workshop sessions (pictured below).

"The IFSTAL Summer School 2016 Marks the culmination of the first IFSTAL year. It offers a fantastic opportunity to build on the activities and interactions of the group throughout 2015-16, consolidating students' food system knowledge and enhanced policy understanding, as well as further developing their skills in 'systems thinking', communicating complexity and presentation techniques."
