Solar Schools Forum
Questionnaire

Dear Teacher

We have recently started the Solar Schools Forum, aimed at providing information and material about clean energy / renewable energy sources (RES) and energy efficiency (EE).

Our team are busy developing a range of educational materials and are collecting interesting examples and activities that address or encourage ‘Solar Schools’. We aim to support you with a range of ‘tools’ useful for encouraging pupils to understand energy and environmental issues that have a global impact. The material will be made available to you, for use in lessons and to start projects at your school.

We recognize that children need to be involved in a practical way, drawing their interest, and allowing them to gain knowledge by experience – our material and information will encourage environmental education in a fun way.

In addition to the fun element, schools can also save money by saving energy and reducing environmental damage caused by using fossil fuels. Please read the background information on page 3, presenting an insight into the reasoning behind this project.

If you are interested in this project and access to such materials, please fill in this questionnaire. It will allow us to find out what your experience is and what type of materials will help you. Any comments and suggestions will also be appreciated!

Your Experience

1. Specific interests (of your pupils and you):

Ages 5 - 8
Ages 9 - 12
Ages 13 - 15
Ages 16 – onwards
Art
Biology
Mathematics
Science
Theatre
Special interest groups (clubs, ..) - Please list

Other (please list)

2. I teach my pupils about global warming (Tº) and what it means / the impact thereof on the environment and the people:

3. I teach my pupils about environmental pollution resulting from using oil, nuclear power and coal.

If yes, where do you find your information:
Formal educational material
Media (TV, radio, newspapers, Internet)
Common knowledge

4. I teach my pupils about sustainable energy / clean energy / renewable energy sources (RES), which do not pollute the environment or harm people (do not release CO2 emissions):

If yes, which energy source(s) do you address?
Bio-climatic or solar architecture / solar buildings

Using photovoltaic systems (PV) for energy production
Using solar thermal systems for hot water
Natural ventilation or daylighting
Other

Bio energy (biomass and biogas) (e.g. hay, sawdust, wood chips)
Geo-thermal energy (using natural hot water and steam sources from the earth)
Hydro power (also tidal and wave power)
Sun / solar energy
Wind energy
Energy efficiency

5. Do you know that a solar device does not stop working in cloudy weather or in winter when the solar radiation is mainly indirect / reduced? (it also works with diffused light)

Current Involvement

6. Are there or have you initiated any projects on solar / renewable energy at your school?

If yes, what types of projects
Organising solar energy days / week for the whole school
Linking up to other energy events (e.g. SunDay, EarthDay, national energy day)
Class outings, e.g. to wind park
Using / studying renewable energy applied in the area (e.g. PV on roof)
Looking at job opportunities in different fields, e.g. sustainable energy sector
Conducting energy efficiency tests in the classroom
Other (please list)

7. Are you aware of / involved in the annual SunDay events in Europe?

If yes, how did you learn about the SunDay events?
from television / radio / the press / internet
from another SunDay participant
from my school / a school in my area
I am a participant

8. Does your city / town / village have a renewable energy installation that can be visited by the pupils?

If yes, please list

9. Does your school use energy-saving materials or renewable energy sources?

If yes, which?
Energy efficient light bulbs
Radiator thermostatic-valves
Reflecting folio behind the radiators
Insulation of doors and windows (modern glazing methods)
Using thermo-insulation materials
Intelligent heating solutions (wood pellets, Combined Heat and Power, Biomass etc …)
Energy provision (PV or solar thermal systems)
Others: (specify)

Requirements / Cooperation Options

10. What kind of support do you need to improve knowledge about renewable energy technologies (RETs) in your school:

Text-books, books, magazines
Practical project ideas
Places to visit with my pupils
Seminars / lectures to update my own knowledge
Contact with expert consultation at my school to start a project
Exchange of experience with other schools
Linking up to local environmental / energy NGOs
Other (specify)

11. Any specific recommendations or suggestions for improvement of the syllabus in this field?

12. If you have any further comments about this scheme, please feel free to add them here.

Background information:
- Schools can save money on electricity and fuels - which can be used for other purposes in the school (depending on the school system, but worthwhile to find out if it is allowed).
- Renewable energy technologies (RETs) are environmentally friendly, meaning that harmful emissions resulting from the use of energy is minimised.
- RETs are widely available and an established technology. However, people need to be better informed about their use and the reason why clean energy is essential (conscious educational and social awareness efforts are needed).
- Using the school as a good example regarding energy use, influences not only the pupils, but also their families and the local community.
- Enthusiasm and motivation shared with others will help to solve the energy problems facing us today.
- Schools need to adapt to the European Union’s requirements fro reducing energy use (energy efficiency) and using clean energy where possible – Europe is aiming to achieve 22% RES by the year 2010.
